Affirmative Action College Admissions

Affirmative action college admissions is a tricky subject. The very phrase affirmative action is loaded with controversy. It helps to know exactly what this phrase means. Rather than forcing a specific quota on a university, affirmative action works to ensure no particular minority group is being discriminated against in any way. This program is certainly not meant to take opportunities away from qualified students and give them to less qualified students. The application process, including the exams such as the SAT, is the same for every student.

When considering affirmative action in schools finances often comes into consideration. Many colleges do have certain financial programs designed to aid ethnic groups who may meet several characteristics such as a low household income. Part of affirmative action is to help students who are qualified for a university education but cannot afford one on their own. There may be scholarships for minority students that can help pay for some of the costs. Students can also take advantage of student loans and grants available from the government.

Regardless of whether or not you use affirmative action to your benefit or not, you will need a good admissions essay. Your admissions essay is part of your application package. This essay should talk about who you are, where you come from, what you want to do with your life and what you hope to gain from a college education. If you have leadership potential for your community or ethnic group, make sure to talk about that, too. Showing a strong interest in the community is always a positive thing on a college application essay. Extracurricular activities may also help your chances of successful admission.
