The personal statement is an important part of the college application process. There are two main types of statements that you may use. The first is considered general in nature and is often the type of personal statement students use when applying for law school or medical school. Then there is the specific personal statement which may be utilized for graduate school or even business school. These statements are specific in nature because they answer questions asked by the school. You may even be asked to provide multiple statements which cover several questions. Reading a sample personal statement for college admission can help you learn how to write your own.
For the general personal statement, you can obtain the information you need by asking yourself a series of questions. These questions might include inquiries about your career goals, strengths and weaknesses, educational history, favorite activities, leadership skills and other skills that relate to your preferred area of study. For graduate school or business school when specific questions are asked of you, think about things you've done that may have a positive bearing on your education or career goals. This may include things like extracurricular activities or community service projects.
Rather than mentioning every single thing you've ever done, keep your personal statement focused on three main points at a maximum. Giving your personal statement a theme is an idea you may want to consider. In your opening sentences, you should hook your reader with a dynamic and compelling introduction. After that, you can go into more detail about your skills, abilities and educational history. You should also talk about why you want to attend the particular school you are applying to.
Although you should never copy someone else's statement, reading a sample personal statement for college admission can help you build a framework for your own. You can see the format and learn how other people have put together their statements. Reading examples is a great way to give you more confidence and even some inspiration when writing your own personal statement. Take your time when writing and make sure to proofread your work several times to make sure there are no errors.
